Hone your route-finding ability with navigation specialist, Thomas Coyne, in this all-day advanced map and compass field class. Under Coyne’s expert guidance, participants will plan their cross-country route for the day taking into consideration land features, terrain, points of interest, and ease of travel. The class will then follow the path of their choice through the desert wilderness. Along the way, Coyne will discuss advanced navigation techniques including triangulation as well as the ecology of the area. Participants will experience the thrill of having their planned route unfold over the landscape during the day. The class will travel approximately eight miles with some boulder scrambling. This is a great opportunity to practice charting a course through Joshua Tree National Park to locate specific rock formations and historical landmarks.
