With daily writing workshops, one-on-ones, and evening readings and critique sessions, this weekend workshop at the Desert Studies Center for established and emerging writers will explore the intersection of literary nonfiction and poetry through prompts that focus both on short memoir and a variety of verse styles, with a special emphasis placed on using the scenic & inspirational remote desert surroundings as a general prompt for generating writing. Participants will develop their creative writing skills through in‐class writing exercises, readings and writing assignments. All levels of writers/beginning writers are welcome! Optional hiking excursions will be offered to further enrich participants’ experience along the edge of Soda Lake in the Mojave National Preserve. Course fees include overnight lodging on Saturday at the Desert Studies Center (dormitory style) and Saturday’s lunch and dinner and Sunday’s breakfast and lunch.
The Desert Studies Center is a field station of the California State University (CSU) located among a haven of natural ponds, dry lakes, and foothills in the Mojave Desert east of Barstow on Highway 15.
This event is supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.
