iNaturalist: In this weekend workshop you will join California Naturalist instructor Russ DiFiori for 2 days learning new ways to enrich your outdoor experience using the iNaturalist app and website. iNaturalist is a global citizen science project that has become the Facebook of this generation of naturalist allowing anyone with photos of plants and animals to post observations of the natural world and participate in a wider community of naturalists in an ongoing effort to document the wonders of biodiversity around us. In this workshop you will learn the necessary skills to participate fully in the iNaturalist community, including how to take useful photographs and post your observations. The workshop starts in the classroom at the Desert Institute where you will learn the basics of the website and the app (available for iPhone and Android) and then we head out for an overnight camping excursion in an exclusive site rarely visited by the public where we will make a wide variety of observation types and spend time identifying common plants and animals of the Joshua Tree National Park. We end the workshop on Sunday back at the classroom where we have wifi to upload our observations. No experience with photography is necessary, but participants will need a digital camera and a device that can access the internet (could be combined in an iPhone, Android, iPad or other similar device), and your favorite field guides for Joshua Tree.
This class offers a camping option with the instructor at the reserved Lost Horse Campground. Please call 760-367-5535 for more information on this exclusive opportunity.
