Instructor: Pat Flanagan, naturalist, instructor
Hike Level: Easy - Moderate

Join naturalist, Pat Flanagan, in this easy half-day walk which follows the old road leading to the Elton Mine and vistas beyond.  Students will caravan to the Split Rock picnic area and from there they will be shuttled to the Lucky Boy Vista trailhead.    Participants will then walk approximately 2.5 miles one-way back to the Split Rock area. The trail crosses a Joshua Tree and Pinyon Pine tableland, skirting boulder piles and crossing shallow washes.  The sandy surface is usually covered with footprints, but the fresh rabbit tracks and quail dust baths suggest you will enjoy a solitary walk.  During the late spring and early summer this area can be a wildflower garden.  Birds are always about as well as busy harvester ants, lizards, snakes, cottontails, ground squirrels, and maybe a coyote or two.  A short distance beyond the mine area is a beautiful overlook toward the Split Rock picnic area.  Flanagan will discuss the ecology of the region, the animal life, and the history of human habitation in the park.
