An isolated dirt road - a warning sign - -a fanatical ex - lawman -and the silence of the desert was shattered with the sudden explosion of gunfire. It was May 11, 1943, and what had begun as a routine trip back to his ranch after wateing his cattle turned into tragedy for homesteader Bill Keys. For while crossing a neighbor's property, he was ambushed, and in the ensuing gun battle, he killed his attacker. Tried and sentenced to San Quentin for manslaughter, he was to spend the next twelve years of his life in a determined effort to  prove that he acted in self - defense. Standing by him in this endeavor was his wife, Frances. She had worked hard for many years alongside her husband, carving out a home in a rock-bound canyon in California's Mojave Desert, and she kept a long and often lonely vigil there until his return. Her unwavering courage, persistence, and faith in justice attracted Erle Stanley Gardner's Court of Last resort. With their help, which followed a complete investigation, Bill was paroled and given a full pardon in 1956.

This is the story of Bill and of the greatest challenge that he ever had to face during his life in the desert near twentynine Palms, California
